Think about your attitudes with yourself. Do you berate yourself harshly every time you make a mistake? Do you live surrounded by negative thoughts that you direct to yourself? Are you nice when something does not go your way? Do you have enough compassion to comfort yourself in difficult times? Travelling the rough roads of self-love is difficult. However, it is worth it. When you know the many benefits that come from self-love, you will begin to see yourself with different eyes.
Without self-esteem, we cannot lead a fulfilling and satisfying life. It is important to learn to love ourselves sincerely, set clear limits when we need them prioritise rest, know our needs and desires. By learning to love ourselves, we gradually get to know ourselves, accept our past and dream of the future. No matter how many times we fall, we learn to value ourselves simply for existing.
In order not to lose sight of the great
gift of self-esteem, we must also stay focused on the reasons why we are worthy
of love. There are times when a person may doubt his or her own worth. At Personal
Mastery, we remind you of seven good reasons to say, “I love myself”.
You will give up negative feelings.
This does not mean that you will never have
negative feelings again. However, when they arrive, you will look at them from
another angle. You will accept them, you will understand them and you will not
force yourself to run away. This process is termed as mindfulness which leads to a peaceful life. Most importantly, you
will practice compassion for yourself. You will be your own best friend: the
one who hugs you and tells you that everything will be fine.
When negative feelings emerge, it will be
enough to ask: "what for?” Once we recognize that we are the masters of
our destiny and that those feelings imprison us, we will let them go and put a
positive spin on them.
You will learn to recognize and let go of the expectations of others.
Society constantly bombards us with mixed
messages. This is how you should see yourself, this is how you should feel, and
this is how you should be… It is easy to get lost in a loop and try to please
others, but that changes with self-love. When you recognize your personal
value, you accept yourself as you are, and even more, you learn to pay
attention to what you want, and not to what others expect of you.
This means that you will feel enough, you will not need anyone's approval. There will no longer be a need to compare yourself or to surpass others because you will understand that everyone is on a different path in this life, just as everyone started from different places.
You will feel at peace.
The best thing about loving yourself is the
sense of tranquillity it causes. Once you know that you are infinitely
valuable, you realize that you are enough. You no longer need anyone or
anything to validate you because all your value is in you. From that peace, you
will find the necessary strength to get up and start your day with meditation every day and pursue your
dreams and goals.
Also, once you love yourself, you feel
safe. You know that you will never abandon yourself, that you will always be
there for you. You will be the one who best knows your wants and needs, the one
who can best understand you.
You will take responsibility for your life.
Once you recognize that you yourself are
the source of your happiness, you discover that it is up to you to change your
life and take the direction you want. You no longer look for external causes:
your happiness will depend on self-love and self-confidence. You can be happy
here and now, you just have to accept and love yourself. Moreover, from that
happiness, you will have the necessary strength to see beyond, towards the
future, and know where you want to go.
You will learn to love others.
Only once you love yourself can you love
others. When you look at yourself with love, you can practice love, compassion,
and acceptance of others. When you recognize your strengths, you will also begin
to recognize the strengths of others. By giving yourself what you deserve, you
will be able to offer others your greatest virtues. In the same way, you can
put a stop to what you do not want.
In addition, you will understand that your
relationships are a reflection of the way you relate to yourself. If you do not
value yourself, others will not value you either. Once you love yourself, you
can begin to put real limits on how others treat you. As the old saying goes,
"we get the love we think we deserve."
You will accept mistakes and failures.
In short, you will learn to be human. You
will no longer treat yourself as a machine that must be perfect all the time,
but you will embrace your human condition, and with it, your vulnerability.
Your inability to be perfect. Moreover, you will know that it is okay. Once you
accept your mistakes, something very good comes next: you allow yourself to
learn from them and grow.
You will overcome victimhood.
Once you know your worth, you will stop
demanding from the external world what you already have in your internal world.
You will not expect others to do everything for you, or to comfort or
understand you. You will understand that everything you need is already inside
you. Moreover, this does not mean that your personal relationships will be
impoverished, but on the contrary, they will flourish. You will be able to
offer the best of yourself to others, and you will enable others to do the
same.
